5 Ways To Find Motivation | What to do when you're feeling unmotivated | AD
Wednesday, 1 July 2020
We can't always be productive and motivated. Sometimes you start your day with good intentions, yet still find yourself scrolling when you should be making your way through a to-do list, completely lacking any motivation to actually do the stuff. I've been there. I know it's frustrating having that nagging feeling of 'I should be doing this' and then desperately trying to push it to the back of your mind because Netflix is calling your name.
Sometimes our motivation levels drop during the day, and other times they're nowhere to be found when we wake up. When we've got things to do, goals to meet. If you want to feel like your best self, a lack of motivation can really get in the way of that. So today I've thought I'd share some tips on what to do when the motivation goes out the window, and advice on where to look for it again.
Here is a list of things to do when you're feeling unmotivated:
- Move
Sometimes we're just feeling a bit restless, our body wants to move rather than sit at a desk typing. So do exactly that. Go for a walk, a run, do a workout video, dance around your bedroom, find your zen by doing some Yoga (I have a full blog post why to do a yoga challenge here) - whatever suits you. Find a way to burn some of that energy. The combo of those post-workout endorphins and a break from the screen might be all you need to get back with that inspiration flowing.
- Change your surroundings
Sometimes, something as simple as working somewhere new can really spice things up - or if that's not an option have a tidy and rejig of your desk. Our surrounding affect how we feel, so if they're feeling a little stale, you probably will too.
- Listen to/watch motivating content
Soon I will do a full blog post on the content I like to watch when I'm looking for that extra push of motivation. Don't underestimate the power of a Youtube video. I always have my most productive days when I've watched a motivating video or listening an inspire podcast while eating my breakfast.
- Vision board
I am a big fan of vision boarding (I have a blog post on it here and videos here and here). It helps to clarify where you're heading and what you're working towards. Plus it actually freaking works (honestly I should have thought it through more when I added a magazine cutting which says "stay home, work out" to my 2020 vision board because it's certainly happened). If you don't feel motivated, it likely that it's because you've lost sight of your end goal - vision boarding will help you to figure out where you want to be heading.
- Take a walk
I pretty much say it every blogpost now (see here, here and here - I guess I'm obsessed with walking) - nature is healing, refreshing and inspiring. If you're not doing your work, you may as well take advantage of the benefits of spending time in the world around you.
- Read
You really can't bring yourself to go through your emails, write that blog post or do whatever you're supposed to be doing? Why not pick up a book? A self-development book might get you considering how to move forward with your goal or a fiction book can transport you to a new world, so your chill time will no longer include that nagging feeling of an untouched to-do list - If you're looking for book recommendations you can find tonnes of reviews here.
Outfit Details
Coming to the end of this post I've realised some of my tips are very similar to what I say in my habits for happiness blog post, but what can I say, for me, happiness and motivation go hand in hand.
I hope you found this post useful! What do you do when you're in need of some motivation?

I find motivation a weird one. For me, it ebbs and flows. I can wake up some days I feel like I can take over the world, and other days I can barely pull myself out of bed.
Recently, I’ve been particularly unmotivated and taken habit in abandoning crossing off my to-do list and trading it in for seeing how much Netflix I can watch. It’s only now, I realise why. I, almost completely, gave up on myself.
My goals felt so far from reach, that I stopped trying, I avoided admitting this by writing a well-intentioned to-do list, knowing I’d only cross off pointless things I added to the list to keep some of the guilt at bay. Everything of substance was soon forgotten, as I spent my afternoon in bed. The work I need to put into achieve the things I want, does not have an immediate payoff. It can feel as though it's all for nothing.
Why did I let all my motivation casually wander out of my life? Because I was scared. Because it seemed so unlikely that I'd ever become the person that I want to be, so it was easier to be as far from the person as possible.
Failing is scary, and not failing, is even more so, because then what? Success can be underwhelming after working so hard, what if it doesn't live up to what I want it to be?
The book Playing Big by Tara Mohr talks about two types of fears:
Pachad is the over-reactive irrational fear that stems from worries of what could happen, worst-case scenarios we imagine.
The other type of fear it talks about is
Yirah which has three different meanings: 1) It is the feeling that overcomes us when we inhabit a larger space than we're used to. 2) The feeling we experience when we suddenly come into possession of considerably more energy than we had before. 3) It is what we feel in the presence of the divine.
Yirah which has three different meanings: 1) It is the feeling that overcomes us when we inhabit a larger space than we're used to. 2) The feeling we experience when we suddenly come into possession of considerably more energy than we had before. 3) It is what we feel in the presence of the divine.
It was only on reading this I realised, I've stopped believing in myself because I'm afraid of taking up more space, of the new energy which success will bring to me. The fear I've been running from, winning a game of hid and seek against by snuggling beneath my duvet at 2pm on a Thursday after, is a good thing. I should be greeting it with open arms.
I didn’t blog last week, because I didn’t want to. The realisation that I'm simply scared, wasn't the kick up the bum I needed. I still didn't feel like taking physical action to make thing happen. So, instead, I’ve been reevaluating. Figuring out what I actually want, and how to work towards that.
I realised, what I always knew:
I want to write. For myself, for magazines, books, fiction, non-fiction. I have a love affair with words, that I'm not ready to end yet.
I want to blog. This website is my space, and I want to take advantage of that, I want more people to read it, I want to take up more space, which is, of course, scary.
and I want to Youtube, because I enjoy the process of editing videos, creating something visual, and having candid chats with a camera. I'm intrigued by filmmaking even at its most basic levels. Again, here I want to take up more space, I want my time and effort to be of value to others, not just me.
There are all things I've done for years, spent my free time working on things, for joy. That joy seemed to dissipate somewhere along the lines recently, I think because I became aware I wanted to take up more space in these areas, it felt I was asking too much by wanting to earn a living from my hobbies. They are things I do for joy, yet so many others who get paid to these this. My chill time is somebody else 9-5, so why the hell can't it be mine?
Rhetorical or not, I've got the answer to that question. I don't believe in myself when I should. If I don't no one else will. I got scared and stopped putting the work it.
So here is me, waving goodbye, or saying hello to that fear, facing it head-on, and saying, I'm going keep at this and one day this will be my day job.
As I said pre-youtube break, I am going to vlogmas this year so it will be great if I feel like people are watching, you can find my channel here.
I'm going to promote my work more and putting my all into blogging again.
Sometimes I'm going to be afraid, but fear can be fuel.

My mum tried to, kindly, talk to me about the big 'what next'. She told me that I need to think about it. I haven't been able to stop crying since, because it's all I've been thinking about and still I don't have the answer.
Everything I want to do with my life takes the building, and it seems people in the career paths I want to be in, have been given different bricks to me. I'm not saying they didn't work for it, because I know they did. But what happens when the work doesn't seem to be paying off? When you're completely invisible, how do you make yourself seen? The work never seems to form anything tangible. Other people just don't seem to care about it, does that mean it's time to give up?
I don't want to spend the rest of my life, in a job I dislike, I want a career I'm proud of, one which I've built with my own two hands, but maybe I'm incapable of that.
Logically, I know they haven't, but I feel the people around me have waltzed into the right careers and I've barely taken a step forward since graduating if anything I've stepped backwards.
I turn 27 soon, and I don't have a job, which for someone who reads endless career books, is heartbreaking.
People keep telling me "loads of people have jobs they don't want" I know they do, but is it really such a bad thing that I want more than that for myself? Wanting to enjoy my life, is not too much to ask for, surely.

Recently, I've found my self a little underwhelmed by my life, a little gutted that it isn't fuller. I've realised the life I'm living, is far from what I want. I've been wracking my brain endlessly, hoping for a solution to come to mind, something I can change to make everything fall into place because where I am right now, does not feel on the money.
I've considered how to put things right, what I can change. I left the job I was unhappy in. I did a whole lot of unfollowing on social media, I spent a full day 'hinching' my bedroom. Now, I'm unemployed, my social media feeds are quieter and my room is clean, and my life is still unfulfilled.
Then something hit me, the thing I need to work on changing is not my surroundings, it's me. The life I lead now is the life which I attracted. It's sort of a shit show, and that's all down to down to me.
I've been struggling lately. I've felt very alone and lost. I've been playing the victim, but now is the time I stop. It's the time I recognise a lot of this struggle is caused by the consequences of my own actions. My actions are something I can change and it's time for a change.
Of course, everything about this concept is daunting. Old habits die hard, you don't wake up one day and become a new person, it's a process.
So here are some things I'm going to work on changing:
1) Say yes, even when I'd rather spend my evening in the pjs reading my book - I'm going to try to be more open to meeting new people, going to different places and just getting out more. I automatically sale my life short by choosing to stay in my bedroom when there is a whole world out there.
2) Run with ideas rather than putting them to the back of my mind - I tend to have loads of ideas buzzing around my head, and the majority of them get ignored, I guess mainly down to fear of trying. I'm going to try to ignore the fear, rather than the ideas and see how that works out for me.
3) Read more self-help and actually put the advice into practice - I'm a little obsessed with those slightly cringy self-help books. I tend to read them, but not actually do that much with the knowledge in them. I feel inspired for a day afterwards, and then I go back to living the same old life, rather than make the changes.
4) Practise what I preach: Meditate daily, write daily, read daily, keep a gratitude journal.
5) Fake it until I make it: Do the work I'd be doing if I already had the life I wanted.
6) Set realistic goals: Sometimes I think my goals can be over-ambitious, which then makes them scary, and leaves me doing nothing. I need to start concentrating on the next 5 minutes of my life instead of the next few years.

Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015 | New Year Goals
Thursday, 1 January 2015
Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very happy new year. Despite some people expressing feelings that New Years is overrated and resolutions are often broken within a week or so, I cannot help but love the feeling the start of a new year gives me. Although life hasn't changed much since yesterday I feel more hopeful and excited for the future.
2015 will be my first full year as a graduate, I am finally beginning to feel like an adult, and I am looking forward to beginning my life as an adult. I am sure it will be a year of a lot of new beginnings, which I feel is much needed in my life at the moment, and I feel my life is finally at a stage where I can feel as though, this is my year. I have finally finished education, and now it's down to me what I do with my life. I am excited about this year. For once in my life, I feel like I can fully understand the saying, the world is my oyster... I would also like to apologise for the cheesy clichéness of this blog post, it is what New Years does to me.
Reminiscing over 2014
Aims for 2015
By the end of 2015, I would also like to feel like a fitter and healthier person (like everyone else, I'm sure). As the year progresses on I am sure you'll be hearing much more about how that journey is coming along for me, as this is something I intend to document on my blog.
You may know I currently working in a shoe shop, which I do enjoy, but it is not a career, by the end of 2015 I'd like to be working hard at a job that I can call a career.
I have rambled far too much this post already, so I am going to cut the rest of my goal into short bullet points otherwise this blog post may go on forever. So other things I would like to do this year are:
2015 will be my first full year as a graduate, I am finally beginning to feel like an adult, and I am looking forward to beginning my life as an adult. I would also like to apologise for the cheesy clichéness of this blog post, it is what New Years does to me.
Reminiscing over 2014
I'm not going to lie, I did not really realise what a good year I had last year (.. it still feel strange referring to 2014 as last year) until I searched my Facebook and Instagram for some pictures of the past year to include on this blog post. When looking for through pictures I realised I am a pretty lucky girl, and I had a pretty good year. Of course there were some not so good times, such as losing my beautiful cat, going through a break up, a bit too much crying over boys and feeling homesick but I started this blog, made my graduate final collection (I studied Fashion), graduated, moved back home, had some pretty great times with friends and family and learnt a lot. Overall pretty good, but something is telling me next year is going to be even better. I feel a lot more aware of who I am and who I want to be than I was a year ago.
Aims for 2015
I don't like to set myself strict resolutions for the New Year as they usually end up being quite unrealistic and never really happen, however, I do like to have some aims for the up and coming year. I am not going to lie, I have got quite a few - but to improve myself and my life I need something to aim for, right? So I've got a lot to aim for in 2015.
Of course, some of my aims relate to this little blog of mine. I started this little blog in March 2014 after having a guest lecturer did a talk at my uni, when he mentioned blogging, shortly after my friend Jess then encouraged me to start a blog, because it seemed like something I'd really enjoy - having started different blogs before I wasn't completed expecting to keep it up, however, I have, and I have begun to enjoy the blogging world more and more.
I began not blogging all that often, taking not so thought out pictures on my iPhone, to where I am now - blogging weekly or more (besides the odd exception) learning about writing and photography, taking photos using my SLR, editing my photos, and planning my content. My blog has come a long way and I have learnt a lot. Not so long ago I reached my first 100 followers - which may not seem a lot to most people, but to me it does, however, I would love my blog to keep growing - If I were able to reach another huge milestone of 1000 by the end of the year that would be amazing, I may be aiming slightly high but 'reach for the moon, land on the stars' and all that jazz.
I will also be trying to have a bit more of a schedule for my blogging - I want to publish at least two posts each week, if not more. As today is Thursday, I am going to promise a blog post every Thursday, one every Monday (maybe excluding while I am in India), and hopefully more than that. I also want to aim to improve my photography and content, maybe trying out a few different style blog posts.
Last year (seems strange saying that...) I started a little tiny Youtube channel (which you can find here), and when I say tiny, I mean tiny. I am yet to even reach double digits in my number of subscribers. Before this, I had never done any filming or video editing, so I have learnt quite a bit but still have a lot to learn. As with my blogging didn't have much of a schedule to this, I upload what I fancied whenever, and then toward the end of the year just stopped. However this year this is something I would like to concentrate on as I have really enjoyed learning about video editing and talking to a camera. Therefore during 2015, I intend to upload a video once a week. I want this to be every Sunday - however, I do have extremely slow internet in my house, so it sometimes takes a day to upload a video - so if it's occasionally a day or two late I'm sorry, it will be there each week though. I also want to film some slightly different style videos this year, I am looking forward to trying my hands at some fashion lookbooks. As for subscribers, it would be amazing to feel as though people watch my videos, so once again I am aiming high in relation to my current number of subscribers, and would love to get to 100 subscribers in a years time.
- Start drawing/painting again - used to spend a lot of time creating are, and for some reason, I stopped, I want to start again, I love drawing and it's something I'd love to improve my skills at, and maybe something I can even share on the blog one day.
- Start scrapbooking - after watching a youtube where Lily Pebbles spoke about her scrapbook I felt inspired, but still wasn't really considering scrapbooking as I thought I was something I wouldn't keep up, however, the next day I was sorting my room, and I kept finding bits and bobs (such as tickets, menus and photos) that I'd kept for memories sake but they didn't have a home when I realised scrapbooking would be the perfect way to tie up these loose ends that I'd like to keep.
- Keep a diary - when I realised I couldn't remember what had happened at the start of 2014, I decided I want to remember the next year, so I may write an entry each day but I am going to keep a diary throughout the year.
- Be nicer to people - I don't think I'm necessarily horrible to people now, but there's always room to be nice, right? I want to be kinder to strangers, make more effort with friends and cut out the nasty bitching.
- Read more - because reading is amazing.
- Improve my photography - because it's a skill I'd love to have.
- Don't get upset over silly things, like boys. I spent far too much time feeling down about things and people who weren't worth those emotions last year. Never again.
- Be more organised - because how else am I going to keep on top of all of these aims?!
Sorry, this post has dragged on a little - I have spent a lot of time considering what I would like the new year to bring and wanted to express my little goal, I feel having them in writing on this little blog might encourage me to keep them up.
I would love to hear some of your goals for 2015, please comment any you have below!
I hope you all enjoyed celebrating the start of the year last night and the early hours of this morning - I had a lovely time (despite a painful wisdom tooth), I went for dinner with a close friend and had drinks with family, and I hope the first day of 2015 has been a good start to the year.
With lots of love
Chloe xx
