A bad day...

Sunday, 26 February 2023

Well, it's been a week for me. A week of reminders that mental health ebbs and flows. That as humans we are inconsistent. Moods are changing and situations are moving, although often at a different speed than we were hoping. We've got to trust the timing, although often it seems the clock is set wrong.

I'm an anxious person. I think everyone has some level of anxiety. But there was a day this week when it felt like my entire being was made of anxiety. I didn't know how I was going to make it through that day. Not in a morbid way, in a way that everything felt so heightened I couldn't imagine being out of it, but here we are.

I cried. I threw up, twice. I breathed, in for the count of 4. I held it for the count of 4. and I breathed out for the count of 4. One, two three, four. I lay on the floor in the fetal position and noticed my body shaking. And eventually had a somewhat normal evening. My mind wasn't switched off, but I went about the motions. I sat in front of the TV while my fiancĂ© cooked dinner. I wasn't watching the TV but it was on. I ate carbonara, but I don't think I tasted it. And then I slept. The next day I had what I could only describe as an anxiety hangover. My head was pounding. But I'd made it to the next day, and from then the week was on the up.

I think that day, I had what people refer to as a breakdown. I'm not really sure how you classify something as a breakdown, but it felt like I had broken. I've had panic attacks before but this felt like more, it felt like I was stuck in a loop of panic attacks. But as my week went it felt more distant, and I remember what it was like to feel joy again. In fact, I even felt joy again.

I know this was triggered by a situational thing. A build-up of a situation which crescendoed. A situation which will hopefully change. And of course, I'm going to take action to not get to this point again. Make changes where they're needed.

This was a personal one I know. I didn't have much of a plan for today's writing session. Beforehand I'd listened to The Ravens podcast, where, Tessa was a guest, and on this podcast about One Tree Hill they spoke about mental health, and the importance of sharing it - and so when I went to write, that's where I went with it. Is spoken about my mental health online before, but I've never gone into the details. Today it felt like the details mattered. That I'd experienced something which felt so intense writing about it might dilute it. Or at least comfort someone else.

Bad days happen, but they don't define the other days, and even when we feel feeble I think we can find the power in us to make changes, at least that's what I'm attempting.

Writer and blogger Chloe Harriets outfit photo against brick wall. Knit jumper, patterned tights

It has been a while.

I lost my way with writing, I lost my way with this blog.

I felt as though I'd run out of things to say. I couldn't find words that held value, every sentence felt like too much or too little.

Life got busy. My life changed, transformed, and morphed into something new. Before I knew it I had new routines. A new home to settle into. A relationship that did the job which writing used to do, clearing the dusty corners in my mind. Life felt lighter.

And then it got heavy. In love and living in a happy home. I struggled with anxiety and found my skin angry with eczema flare-ups (severe and covering 90% of my body) making day-to-day tough. Transforming little things feel like big things, and not in a nice way. With that my mind filled with fog, and my priority was navigating each day, with only the energy to binge Netflix shows in my pockets of spare time.

Things have moved forward as they do. And the dust had cleared and now I have space to find words again.

I've wanted to get back into blogging for the longest time. I just no longer knew how to do it. Ideas for blog posts stopped coming to me in the middle of the night. It wasn't until I was reading Jamie Varon's newsletter that I realised why.

She said "I want to outgrow past versions of myself so completely that trying to go back is painful. I don’t want to be who I was."

And it made me so painfully aware, I'd been trying to grow by going backwards.

I was trying to make this website of mine what it used to be. Trying to mould words to sound like a past version of myself. But I'm not her anymore, and there's value in growth. Maybe eyeliner reviews don't spark joy like they used to. The purpose of my writing is not what it once was. I'm no longer trying and failing to create a career out of sharing things I love online. I'm writing to know myself more. Play with words again, build them into stories and wanderings which might provide clarity, provoke thought, or a moment of peace. For myself and maybe for whoever else decides to read.

Now I've learned things are fluid, and there might come a time I want to use this platform to share a really great lipstick, but for now, once a week, I'm going to sit down with my laptop and write what comes to me. I might not share everything, and sometimes there might not be a lot to share, but every week, the intent will be there, and I think that's enough.

I'm ready to write again, and I hope you'll come and read what I've got to say.

Typing feels exciting again, and that's really something.

And although the style might be slightly different, after typing away, I feel light, like I used to.

2022 Goals

Girl with Wine - Hello 2022 - 2022 Goals

Hello, happy new year. 2022 feels good, doesn't it?

As I do around this time every year, I've been thinking about the person I am, the person I want to be, the things I want to achieve and the kind of life I would like to lead and use this information to set my intentions and goals for the year to come (my blog post on my word of intention for the year is coming soon too, promise).

I know some people don't like thhe practice of create new year goals and resolutions, but I personally find them refreshing and exciting. They add a little extra flavour to the hope I find within a new year beginning.

So without further ado - here are my goals for 2022...

Feel like a writer again - and a blogger for that matter.

I used to feel like a writer. I used to shae poetry on my Instagram despite cringing whilst pressing post. I've written an entire finished draft of a novel, which is simply sitting on the laptop I'm typing on right now, just waiting around for me to make some edits. I used to write for the sake of writing. For how it made me feel.

My life had transformed a lot over the past few years. It's become happier, one I'd wished for, but with that my constant desire to write somewhat faded. It wasn't that I no longer enjoyed it, more that I no longer need to feel the release it provides. I no longer feel so lost that words on the page are the only way I can find myself. But still, I miss writing. I miss the places it takes and the peace it brings me. I miss the thrill of the words just coming to me. The high of feeling like I've explained myself in a way I couldn't out loud. I stopped writing because I didn't feel so sad, so lost that I needed it. But now I'm happy and in the place I want to be and maybe it's worth writing about that too. My happiness is worth writing down, recording on paper.

I miss talking about my blog with pride. I miss showing up, sharing with my tiny part of the internet every week. In 2022, I will find the writer and the blogger within me again.

A long time ago I wrote this blog post. Deep down I'm still that girl who dreams of being a writer. So I'd better get writing again.

Have more fun with fashion.

I love fashion. I have a degree in fashion. I watch shows like Emily in Paris in awe of the crazy outfits. I spend my lunch breaks scrolling fashion video on TikTok, feeling a jealous ping of all the cool 'fits. Then I realised if I want to have fun with clothes I can. I can get creative with my outfits and enjoy what I'm wearing because I want to. I can experiment and try new looks and express myself through the clothes I choose - so I'm going to do just that.

I've also decided to start posting 'get dressed with me' video on TikTok to encourage me to put a little effort into my outfits. Plus, I see so many styling videos on TikTok that I love, who's to say I can't be one of those people too - if you fancy checking them out, you can find my TikTok here.

Complete 5 paintings

I've recently rediscovered my love for creating art. I've been getting out my paintbrushes more often. For Christmas this year I painted my boyfriend's dad a picture of his home village in Italy. It was a present I handed over with self-doubt, but now I see it proudly displayed in their kitchen, I share its pride. The majority of the time I paint a picture, it doesn't get finished. There is always more that could be done, especially when I paint for no reason other than the joy that the brush stroke on the paper brings me. But here's the thing, I don't think I'm bad at it. Out of practice yes, but bad no. In fact, if I put in the work, I think I could be pretty good at it.  So this year I will finish 5 paintings, at least. Considering I still have almost finished pieces from years ago sat around, actually completing them is a pretty big deal for me.
I see creating art in my future so I'm going to lean into that. Who knows, maybe at some point I'll feel confident enough to start selling pieces. And if the pieces are a load of rubbish, I will have experience the peaces that the painting process brings me, so that's something.

Make 5 pieces of clothing that I actually wear.

I used to sew a lot. Like I said, I've got a degree in fashion, but it's been a while since I've made anything larger than a hair scrunchie - however when I created my Etsy store during the pandemic it did revive my love for sewing. More recently I've seen a lot of people creating their own clothes on TikTkok and it's  made me think, why don't I do that. I know how to, I enjoy it, and I'll get some cool custom pieces of clothing (which will definitely help me have more fun with fashion). I figured it was the pattern cutting that was putting me off. It's the first step and for me the least enjoyable part. But I can pattern cut so until recently I going to do that part myself - and then I realised I can buy patterns. I can adjust them to make things more custom if I want to. But without that step, I feel so excited about it. There's no need to be put off by something, which I don't necessarily have to do. So I've bought myself some trouser patterns and I am excited to get sewing.

Actually, start my search for a literary agent and publisher

This one links back into the first goal really. I think it's time to try a little harder to do something with that book I wrote (I'm pretty sure I've had this goal before, but who knows, this could be the year).

Go outside every day

This is such a simple thing, that makes all the difference to my mental health. I'm working from home at the moment, and sometimes before I realise it I haven't been outside for a day or two. This year I'm going to make a conscious effort to get outside each day. To breath in the fresh air, and have a moment or two to take in nature.

Have you set yourself any goals for 2022?

I'll be sure to update you on how mine are going as the year progresses!

Girl in sunny window of coffee shop drinking iced latte - poetry blog post

Sharper Emotions

Sometimes I wonder
If I feel too intensely
If my heart breaks too easily
Why I need to be handled so delicately
Desperately I desire to numb the sensitivity

The emotions that are sharper
Aren't just those darker
   My laugh echos louder
and smiles run deeper

My love creates cosmic energy
which I feel moving through each inch of me

So maybe it's a blessing
that I don't feel less

Although mostly it seems
I'm an emotional mess.

___________

Too Sensitive

Maybe next time
before you
confidently claim
I'm too sensitive
You might
think of my feelings
before you go about
hurting them.

____________

Unsure

For a precious
perfect instant
I felt so sure

But a moon has passed
and I guess I don't
anymore.

___________

Mosaic

I thought
   You'd changed
That the past was something
   we could rearrange.

Gentles kisses would allow me
to disengage
Instead, I'm questioning why I stayed,
mistakes I've made.

I hoped we'd make
what we'd broken
into something
     beautiful
Like a ceramic mosaic,
Sticking shards to create art, in the places it fell apart.

But there's familiar you
I see peeking through
between giggles and kind gestures.

I can't unsee
You can't unsay
So maybe it's best
we call it a day.

______________

One Week

Only a week has passed
   Since I wondered
If it were too soon
to tell you
      I love you.

Now I'm questioning
whether it's
     too late
to say
     Goodbye.

______________

Irrelevant

How I strongly I feel
   for you
Is irrelevant
when it weakens
How I feel about
myself.

______________

Feeling Heavy

I think of my weight so often
 it leaves me feeling heavy
My clothes feel tight
and my mind implies
 that's not alright.

I punish my mistakes,
eat another slice of cake
and whisper
diet starts
tomorrow.

Tomorrow comes, I poke my tum
and eternalise shame
Finding somewhere new to point the blame.
as if the shape of my body cause for complaint.
as if my curves represent wrongdoings
and stretch marks are a nuisance.

I analyse my size, wonder if I'm too wide.
But if I took a moment to push the aesthetics aside,
be clichĂ© and think of inside,
I'd remember

it's this body is keeping me alive.

_____

Monochrome Kaleidoscope

It's like I'm looking through a
         cryptic kaleidoscope
Of mirrored, shattered
black, grey and white
In search of confidence, it will be alright.
When I can't see clearly
through the monochrome
Alone amongst dancing disjointed shapes
Unable to see means of
escape.

_______

Unreachable

Late twenties
longing
for a career
which I can't quite reach
Is the loneliest place,
I've ever been.

________

Happily ever after

I felt free and light and happy
and then you called me heavy
and then it hit me
the weight of us
the weight of falling back
in love
Wondering if I'm enough
or maybe I'm too much.
Of knowing I deserve better
More than the kindness you endeavour
but can't quite master.

There's Gilmore Girls and sunny days of laughter
and
occasional
coffee shop
tears
They leave you, confused. Unamused.
Brilliant, beautiful and emotional
It isn't a complete disaster
yet that's not the recipe for
happily after ever.

_________

Drunken, Dancing Souls

The music stops.
The light obnoxiously turns on.
We realise the crowd has dissolved into a few drunken souls
dancing
through the chatter-filled silence.

We're not ready to go home.

_________

Not so pretty poetry

These words entanglements
we're supposed to bear some resemblance
to poetry
   pretty poetry.

They shouldn't be means to complain
but my body and soul
I feel they've been drained
So we're left with the scribbles
of going insane.

On trying.

Fashion blogger Chloe Harriets wearing a denim dress and pink tee - article on trying

Something which comes alongside and usually before succeeding is trying. Something which comes alongside and usually before trying is fear. As humans, we often make assumptions about our abilities, we have a biased idea of what's realistic for us. what we are 'good' at and where we fall short. These assumptions can then play into that fear. They create a domino effect pushing down our desire to try and ability to succeed. These assumptions leave dreams and ambitions, as just that. An idea in our heads, a figment of our imagination and nothing more.

Sometimes the fear an excuse, a way for us to not put in the effort, it's our personal jail free card. It's the mindset of "I'm rubbish at that, so there's no point trying" which I know only too well.

The thing is, often it's all in my head, the idea I'm rubbish at something. Through lack of attempts, sure it seems tangible. The little effort is reflected in lack of ability which creates the illusions that I right in not trying, because the feeble attempts, without the actual work, aren't successful. But what if I stopped basing my ideas on illusions, instead looked for proof. Where to find proof? The proof in the trying. You never know if you don't try. I don't mean some half-assed occasional effort. I mean trying with my full ass. Trying until things get uncomfortable. Can I push myself to be good at something I've told myself I'm bad at? There's only one way to find out.

I've blogged for years, but social media hasn't been my strong suit. I've convinced myself over and over I'm just bad at building a following, so haven't put the effort in.
I've written daily but imposter syndrome has stopped me feeling worthy, so I haven't sent the pitches.
I stopped sharing my poetry through fear of being vulnerable.
I set up a newsletter but was too concern about the typos and spelling mistakes to click send.

Those aren't full ass attempts. Heck, they're not even half a cheek.

What will happen when I decide the fear doesn't matter? If anything the fear an indication I'm trying and always, I'd like to be known as the girl who puts the effort in, someone who's determined and hard-working.

So, now is where I start trying. Here is where I stare fear in the face. Maybe I'll be successful, and maybe I won't, but I think the trying counts for more than we give it credit for.

So with all of this in mind... this will be my first newsletter, to give you an idea of how I'll be exploring my thoughts in your inboxes, I thought I'd post it to the blog too.

You can subscribe here for more newsletters where I'll be exploring my thoughts.

On Writing Poetry.

Poem written by Chloe Harriets

If you follow me on Instagram, you may know I write poetry, which I used to post. Somewhere along the lines, imposter syndrome hit, and I became embarrassed of that vulnerability, so I deleted it from my feed, and like that, it went back to being my secret habit.

It's something which carries both shame and pride for me. It's often a source of insecurity, it feels like an uncool hobby, and the writing tends to be about my feelings, which although they matter, it can be pretty intense to be so raw with them. It feels cringe.

I've always loved writing poetry, despite never being particularly talented at it. I'm an over-thinker, an avid reader and a diary keeper, writing it feels natural, it slots into who I am.

I remember writing a poem with my auntie and uncle when I was younger, I think for a school project and enjoying playing with the words, laughing with them as we tried to create rhymes, and rearranged words. I remember the pride a felt when I figured the combination of those words which worked the best.

I wrote a  poem in primary school which got published in a local church book, and that was the first time I'd done something which had got recognised. I was so proud.

Once I made a tumblr, with the username Iwillbecomeawriter, where I posted poetry, but soon deleted it due to insecurity.

There have been times my head has felt like it's exploding and my heartbreaking, and finding a tangible, maybe beautiful way to put that on to paper, made it easier to cope. Despite being dreadful at spelling, I don't remember a time I wasn't fascinated with words and how we string them together. How they can carry weight and how the right combination of them, can make a person feel. Words can evoke emotion which you didn't even know was there.

I'm usually quite a closed person. I'm introverted, shy and I struggle to talk out loud about my feelings, it's not how I communicate, speaking doesn't always work for me, I stutter, and hold back, sometimes I simply can't seem to make the words move from my mind to something which comes out of my mouth. But writing down nonsense, and trying to make it something, trying to untangle how I feel amongst the words, that's what works for me.

I don't think I'm good at writing, but I long to be. I'm a great believer in practice so each day this month I'm writing a poem, whether I feel like it or not, and I'm posting it to this Instagram, whether I think it's good or not because I want to push myself. I want to teach myself to be better with words, I want to have the ability to make people feel, and I want to take in all that I feel.

It's cringe for sure, it's embarrassing, writing poetry. But some pretty cool people do it too, and I've felt nothing for than admiration for those people. Plus I'd be doing it whether I shared it or not, so it's about time I rediscovered that pride I had as a child when my poetry was published for others to see.

blogging career diary life lifestyle personal thoughts writer writing

Dear Diary,

Friday, 2 November 2018

My mum tried to, kindly, talk to me about the big 'what next'. She told me that I need to think about it. I haven't been able to stop crying since, because it's all I've been thinking about and still I don't have the answer.

Everything I want to do with my life takes the building, and it seems people in the career paths I want to be in, have been given different bricks to me. I'm not saying they didn't work for it, because I know they did. But what happens when the work doesn't seem to be paying off? When you're completely invisible, how do you make yourself seen? The work never seems to form anything tangible. Other people just don't seem to care about it, does that mean it's time to give up?

I don't want to spend the rest of my life, in a job I dislike, I want a career I'm proud of, one which I've built with my own two hands, but maybe I'm incapable of that.

Logically, I know they haven't, but I feel the people around me have waltzed into the right careers and I've barely taken a step forward since graduating if anything I've stepped backwards.

I turn 27 soon, and I don't have a job, which for someone who reads endless career books, is heartbreaking.

People keep telling me "loads of people have jobs they don't want" I know they do, but is it really such a bad thing that I want more than that for myself? Wanting to enjoy my life, is not too much to ask for, surely.

I guess there's nothing to do, but keep working, and hopefully, in the future, I'll have some more positive diary entries to share,

Love,
Chloe x

Lost my mind

Sometimes I wonder
If I've lost my mind.
Maybe she's wandering down supermarket aisles,
like a child in search of Mum, after a mission to fetch bread.
Sometimes I wonder if one night I simply
put her to bed,
and she's not woken from her lie in,
like a teenager snoozing at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon
Sometimes I wonder if she got bored of me
or peaked too soon.

But if I'm quiet, I hear her whisper,
Her voice is loud when I choose to listen.
So maybe many
 will think I'm crazy.
 She's just been busy
- my favourite lady.

___

Many Things

You were many things.
Unexpected and exciting,
Impossible,
Indecisive
Which ironically
left fate decided.

You were many things
that I liked,
and some things that shocked me
Some made me smile
That made me laugh in a state joyful
   denial.

You were many things.
But what startled me the most
Was the moment
I could feel the familiarity of your
   ghost.

You were many things.
Mostly wonderful
but, that doesn't count for much when you're
   invisible.

____

Feeling Heavy

I think of my weight so often
 it leaves me feeling heavy
My clothes feel tight
and my mind implies
 that's not alright.

I punish my mistakes,
eat another slice of cake
and whisper
diet starts
tomorrow.

Tomorrow comes, I poke my tum
and eternalise shame
Finding somewhere new to point the blame.
as if the shape of my body cause for complaint.
as if my curve represent wrongdoings
and stretch marks are a nuisance.

I analyse my size, wonder if I'm too wide.
But if I took a moment to push the aesthetics aside,
be clichĂ© and think of inside,
I'd remember
it's this body is keeping me alive.

____

Lonely

You reminded me I was lonely
I’d forgotten how I felt
It seemed second nature
Not to question quiet
   with eager awaiting ears.

I forgot the comfort
    the slightest touch could bring
That magic lives within the warmth of skin brushing
    skin
The spark a simple stroke ignites within.

Now I remember that I’m lonely,
As I’m sitting all alone
I can’t help but regret your reminder.
It spun your insignificance, fast.
Leaving me unsure whether I’m looking forward
Or glancing towards the
   past.

____

Paint the Sky

I thought of painting the sky with
You
I pictured
   vibrant pink, violet, red,
   electric blue.
But then our colours swirled together
Our energy drained from mixing
We created the deepest shade of
g r e y.

That haunted sky
Surrounded us, silent.
I felt each syllable I heard the quiet clouds say.

A New Beginning, A Leap of Faith and A Lot of Hard Work.

Monday, 3 September 2018

The summer of 2010, I found myself in tears. I was having a conversation with my mum.  "But I don't want to go, I don't even like children," I told her.
"I know Clo, but it's only for a few months until you start Uni. It's not forever and you need some money" she replied, frustrated.

My new job wasn't as bad as I had expected. The hours were long and I hated singing to crying babies. But it was okay, working at the nursery. I needed the money, and I actually bonded with some of the children. I liked painting with them, they made me laugh, and there's something kind of wonderful about having an excuse to play as an adult.

While I was at Uni, I returned to work at the nursery between term times. When you're a student, money is money. I graduated with a BA(honours) degree in Fashion and returned to that job while looking for something new. I found a new job, it seemed perfect, it wasn't. The pay was shit, and when my probation was up, despite being great at every other aspect of the job,  I was told I not confident enough doing the one part of the job I hated. I returned to my search and the comfort of my old job, retelling the Gruffalo without one having to look down at the words. I got a job on a makeup counter. I decided it wasn't for me. I found myself, back in that familiar building, singing with Preschoolers, and changing nappies all over again.

I worked at a job I never wanted for 8 years. Sometimes I liked it.  There were days I laughed with my colleagues, my friends. The children called me pretty if I wore makeup (which was rare). They drew me pictures of rainbows, I stuck them to my bedroom wall like a proud parent displaying finger paintings on the fridge.
There were days I locked myself in the staff toilet and cried. Days parents complained, no matter how hard I worked. Sometimes the children played up, as children do. When they wouldn't listen, I felt out of control, not just of them, of my entire life. On these days, I hated myself because I dreamed of more. These days outweighed the ones I felt lucky.

Despite the hints of joy, my life felt mediocre. I felt embarrassed talking to my friends from Uni. I let go of friendships because I felt so ashamed,  my life wasn't enough for me. Despite working hard, having a job which some people love, I was always so aware it was not what I wanted. Being told I was good at it, or that I was lucky to have a job I could count on, did not change the simple fact, that it wasn't, isn't, what I want to spend my days doing.

I blogged in the background but felt foreground worthy. I wrote countless diary entries, spent my bus journeys typing poetry into the notes on my iPhone. I read books. I longed to write more, to write better. So I took a course. It made me realise, I didn't just want to write better, I want to be an actual real-life writer, you know, who earns a living from it (on realising that, I wrote this blogpost).

I wrote more. I encouraged 3 years old to eat their veg. I wrote more. I helped children master potty training. I wrote. I gave out stickers for good behaviour while daydreaming of writing more.

I did another course  'How to Write and Pitch for (Women's) Magazine with Laura Jane Williams, although I struggle to tweet without a typo (I'm working on it folks), the feedback seemed to indicate, I'm actually pretty alright at writing, I just need to send the pitches. My sister told me I'm a very talented writer, a friend started crocheting my poetry to display at an exhibition, and my friends text me to say they connected with my blog posts. The Universe was gently nudging me and quietly whispering, that maybe, I'm not the only that can see value in my words.

I started getting dizzy spells. I'd suddenly feel overcome with a feeling of faint. One Wednesday afternoon,  I found myself, at work, laying on the kitchen floor, feet elevated, waiting for the world to come back into focus. It was as though felt my body was telling me something.

I decided something had to change. I handed in my notice, with no job to go to. I didn't give it a second thought. I made the decision something had to change, so now was the time to change something.

I couldn't build my dreams, earning little money, working long hours and a place which is tainted with my feelings of inadequacy.

So I decided to take advantage of the privilege that comes alongside being an adult living with a parent, trust my gut and get the hell out that job.

I'm 26, slightly terrified, and technically unemployed. I'm also excited.  I'm not sure what's next but my leap of faith is forcing me to keep writing, to look for people who fall in love with my words.

I'm intending on becoming a real writer. Yes, people look at me as though I'm crazy when I tell them I've left my job, but for the first time ever I feel I'm thinking clearly, I'm putting what I want first, despite the risk. I'm sick of my mediocre life, so it's time to build that career that exists in my mind.

For the first time in a long time, I'm hopeful. I'm trusting my gut, I'm trusting the Universe, and I can't wait for what's to come.

The Damage of Dreams.

Monday, 20 August 2018
photography by Madeleiine Grace

We buy ‘Dream Big’ Posters, ask children what they want to be when they grow up, and upon finishing a project comes the inevitable question ‘what next?’ Ambition is something we praise. I try to surround myself with those whose work ethic I admire. Having few career aspirations is a red flag.

Dreams are great, but with making them come true there’s pressure. We overlook the sacrifice and strain that comes with being a #girlboss.

According to moneymow.com, for nearly all age groups (except 70+), most people expect to be more happy in the future than today. This stat certainly rings true for me. I have high hopes for the future because it is what I’m working my ass off for today.

Alone, I’m cracking under pressure, yet to reach my goals. My mind is running in circles, wondering if when I get to that place, will it be enough? It’s unlikely. There’s always room for more in this power-hungry society, where we wear our busy schedule like a prize badge.

Could that ambition we’re all so proud of, that we strive for, actually be damaging?

80 per cent of British females they put too much pressure on themselves to be perfect even though they accomplish an average of 26 tasks a day. 26 tasks don't feel enough. Our stress walks hand in hand with our to-do list, which is, of course never-ending. When we're not ticking things off, we're feeling guilty about it, lazy even. That list is infinite due to this notion of more which strips us of the pride of our achievements. Amongst curated Instagram feeds and viral success stories, the average Joe isn’t going to measure up. This inadequacy makes us more determined, more hungry for success.

My mental health hit an all-time low, I felt down, desperate and ashamed of myself. These were the repercussion of attempting to make dreams come true. I'd hear myself talk about my ambitions, and despite the work, I put in, the words felt empty. Rather than worrying about my own perception of happiness, I began putting my all into making something tangible of those dreams, which made me feel like a failure over and over again.

I came across a quote which changed my perspective. “Remember when you wanted everything you have right now”. It was a reminder that we all need to take a moment to appreciate our steps, to pause while climbing this never-ending ladder.

What is the point in working so hard, and never appreciate its pay off? Why does one day have to be so far into the distant future when we’ve already travelled miles with all the hours we’ve put in. Where exactly does success fit amongst that full schedule with no downtime? There aren’t any smiles living a life of the edge of burnout.

How to stop ambition overpowering happiness? Take some time out. Stop worrying about the future and start appreciating the now. Keep a gratitude journal. Put your phone away, stay in the moment. Unfollow those who fill your bones with envy. Remember the to-do-list never goes away, it sounds like twisted advice, but learning I would never conquer my entire to-do-list was the most freeing lesson.

I think success is more likely to come off the back of happiness. Happy people attract good things, stressing about never being enough, will only make that into reality, instead put that energy into enjoying your day. You might even be more productive tomorrow if you show yourself a little love today.

March Poetry.

Monday, 2 April 2018

______

I told you
with confidence,
'I'm far from affectionate'
Then I realised,
I want to drape myself over you
Like a throw smothering a bed.

______

We feel more real
than what I had imagined
My mind can fathom
That is this something
insignificant
or
 passing.

______

It's taking a
world
of willpower
to not prematurely
feel the dull weight of our
inevitable
goodbye.

______

Often I ask myself,
Am I smart
enough?
The answer,
always
Is a wild entanglement
of
Yes
and
No

______

There's something quite enchanting
about your
swirls of old
and new
Which dance together
Like my energy
dances for
you.

______

The was a field
of love
which got lost
in the translation
between
 us

______

Maybe the word crazy,
would roll from your tongue a lot less,
 If you started to treat
those who feel for you
with a little respect

______

I can't help but
indulge
in our taste of
bittersweet
despite the
stomach ache
I'm begging for
when you
leave

______

My heart
Breaks
over everything
We could have been
and never
were
