Recently I found myself falling out any routine, my once good habits became abandoned - I think the combination of being unwell, lockdown and moving into a new environment got to me, and I found it easy to push aside those little habits and daily routines, unaware of the impact it would have. After a few weeks of feeling all over the place and noticing the toll of that on my mental health, I realised I needed some positive routine back. So once again I've been developing new routines to follow, of the little things which keep my wellness up.

In the future, I will post sine more detailed versions on my morning and evening routines (possibly on my Youtube channel, so make sure you're subscribed) but for now, I thought it would be nice to share some of the habits which have got me happier on the day-to-day.

5 Habits for Happiness:

- Journalling:

Honestly, I find daily journaling has such a positive impact on my mental health. Just getting my thoughts and feelings out onto paper, makes me feel as if I've emptied any negativity from my mind. Sometimes I use journaling to get things on my chest, sometimes to express my hopes for the future - usually, it's just word vomit, I don't think about it too much, I just write what comes to mind and boy oh boy it can be therapeutic.

- Reading:

For me, there's no escape quite like reading - I find it transports me to another world and allows me to let go of my worries. I read everything from self-help to fiction, I listen to audiobooks, flick through pages, the lot. You can read some of my book reviews here or join me on my reading journey for this year with #chloeharrietsbookclub.

- Moving your body:

When we work at desks, spent our evening binging Netflix, and our nights sleeping, it's easy to really not spend that much time moving... however I've found on those days I find myself more stationery than not, I feel a little slobby. Implicating more exercise in my routine has worked wonders for my mental health. I do regular fitness session via Zoom with @laurenalicefitness, and on the days which I'm not up for a full-on workout, I find something as simple as going for a walk or dancing in the kitchen gets those good endorphins going for me.

- Going outside:

Fresh air and nature are good for the soul. Yet still, it's super easy to end up cooped up in the house if I don't have plans (which I haven't had many of due to lockdown) so I've been making going outdoors a priority and taking myself for daily walks and it's been so refreshing - definitely, a habit to I need to keep up.

- Phone free time:

I've been trying to step away from my iPhone screen a little more because as we all know too much phone time isn't good for the brain. So recently I've committed to at least an hour before bed screen-free - and I'm just trying to leave my phone in a different room to me during to the day to ease back on the mindless scrolling, and I'm feeling so much better for it.

Just because I'm out of love, that doesn't mean love is lacking.

love, valentines day flatlay image - roses, card, poetry book

With Valentine's day yesterday, I found myself reflecting on love. Valentine's day is one for couples. There are those who throw Galentines or anti-valentines day events, but all and all it aimed those in a relationship, those in love with each other. Single people don't tend to get a look in.

But why? It's about love. Just because I'm not in a romantic relationship, that doesn't mean I don't love. It doesn't I'm not familiar with the feeling of butterflies, and there isn't magic in my average day. Being out of a romantic relationship should not reflect that love is lacking for me because it isn't.

I love as often, and deeply as anybody else does, despite my lack of a partner. Like those couples buying each other cards and planning their date nights, I deserve to celebrate the things I love, no matter how big or small.

So here are some things I really love:

1) Laughing until my stomach hurts

2) Capturing moments through the lens of a camera

3) Gilmore Girls

4) 500 Days of Summer

5) Harry Styles

6) Painting. Looking at a picture full of colour which I've created, and knowing that page started blank. The therapeutic feeling of mixing colours and making marks.

7) Reading in bed on a Sunday morning

8) Cups of tea

9) Reading poetry aloud, putting words in the air

10) Realising I've made a friend

11) Remembering I'm brave enough to attend events alone

12) Lattes and poetry writing

13) Natural pretty lighting that enhances everything

14) Sunsets

15) Watching a cheesy movie for the first time

16) Falling in love with the character in a book

17) Walking through nature with my friends

18) Receiving cards in the post, paper reminders that I'm loved.

Maybe it seems a little sad, that there's not a person who made the list. Sure, there's not other half me of me, but I'm whole without it. There is so much more to love in life, and my life is full of a lot of love, despite my single relationship status.

Some friends and I recently spent a Sunday wandering through Lacock, exploring the beautiful village. Living in Bristol, it wasn't too far to pop to for a day trip on Sunday, and it's definitely somewhere I'll be heading again.

Our morning included exploring the village, which left me feeling as I stepped into another world. We headed to the Abbey. where wandering through the corridors which offered a familiar comfort from the Harry Potter films. And then breathing in the freshest air, taking in thriving plants in as we looked around a greenhouse.

Being pescetarian, there wasn't too much for me to choose from - I was told, there's a veggie/vegan menu throughout the rest of the week, which unfortunately isn't available on Sunday's.  The disappointment of not being able to have a veggie roast for me, soon wore off as I realised the fish I opted for was delicious through every last bite. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was inviting, making it the perfect way to break up our day.

We then headed for a slightly muddy walk. Blessed by the crisp winter's air, we wandered through the fields, chatting, catching up, snapping pictures, and taking in the nature surrounding us.
When I returned home, I warmed up in a bath and realised how much more content I felt, than I had before the stepped foot out of my house that morning. There's something wonderful in exploring somewhere new with close friends and appreciating all the nature, architecture and food around.

I Like My Boring Life.

Friday, 18 January 2019

Something I recently became aware of, even embarrassed by, is how boring my life is.
I've felt stupid when I found myself lacking in fun anecdotes when friends asked me what I've been up to, and cringed as I once again said: "oh, not much really, just the usual."
This year I did vlogmas and it seemed I spent my time editing 24 almost identical days of my life, and I put them live and felt ashamed of how repetitive my day to day is.

My mum asked me if I always get bored of sitting in my room, for a brief moment, I felt that familiar shame, and then I realised the truth is no, I don't.

My life is boring, there's no doubt about it, yet still, I like it, so does that really matter?

I'm a creature of habit, I'm rewatching Gilmore Girls for (I think) the 4th time, and find it so much more enjoyable now I pretty much know all of Lorelai's bits word by word. I like my routine, I find comfort in the predictable. Last-minute plans make me feel anxious, and honestly, sometimes I  would rather be in my PJs with a book than in elaborate social situation which although it might make for good stories, that doesn't mean I'll be having a good time.

Why should I have to step out of my comfort zone if I want to? So what if I like staying home and reading? Does that make me boring? Does boring that really depends on the places we go and the people we see? The inner workings of the mind can be something of wonder, just because you don't see what's going on in somebodies head that doesn't automatically make it dull. It should cause for intrigue, not the assumption.

What if the bubbles in my bath are as exciting as I want things to get? And my idea of going a little bit wild is not setting an alarm but knowing I will most likely still be awake at 8am.

Sure, sometimes I like going for drinks with my friends, chatting to strangers and seeing where the night takes me. It's fun every now and then, but when all is said and done, I like the simple pleasures of the plants in my bedroom and a nice cup of tea. Sometimes I don't want to go to places in search of stories to tell. I like my life, as boring as it is. I like staying home and painting, crocheting and watching Netflix and falling in love with the characters in my books. Sometimes the world I create is my head is big enough for me. It might seem boring, maybe it is, but I like it, and surely that's all that matters.

Chasing Little Joys.

Friday, 12 October 2018

On listening to a Nobody Panic podcast, on happiness, I found myself thinking about little joys. I'm someone who chasing tends the big things. I've found myself wrapped in sadness because the big things aren't happening to the timeline which I've decided is appropriate, and when these things do happen, I've built them up so high, that they're often underwhelming.

My main focus has shifted recently. I'm looking for happiness in all the places it hides. I'm searching for the smallest joys in my most mediocre days. Yes, this blog post is probably up there with one of the most cheesy things I've written, but I'm okay with that because I think with gratitude we become a magnet of good things. Yes, I am a law of attraction wanker.

Places I've found happiness recently:

  • One returning from babysitting one Saturday night, rather than heading straight to bed, I found myself, my mum and my stepdad crowded around a phone singing Robbie Williams Angels. I'm not sure how it came about, but it was the purest happiest moment. We're all terrible, like really terrible at singing. English is my stepdads second language so naturally, he was getting the lyrics wrong. The shambles of this heartfelt performance that my neighbours probably hated us for made me grateful, that at 26 years old, I still live with two of my favourite people. It doesn't matter that I'm an adult living with my parents when I have a bloody great time with them.
  • Wearing my favourite perfume - Spritzing on a bit of Glossier You, or Laura Mercier Ambre Passion sends a smile to my face every time I catch a whiff of myself and remember I smell delicious.
  • Listening to a good podcast - Nobody Panic Podcast never fails to make me laugh, and CTRL ALT DELETE  always leaves me feeling inspired.
  • In exercise - Crazy, I know, but there's something about only focusing on my body and nothing more.
  • In texts from friends - from chats about Joe Sugg on Strictly to messages to let me know they're proud, I've found myself smiling at Whatsapp a lot recently.
  • In books - Recently I've got into reading YA fiction again and there's something nostalgic about reading about teenage crushes and friendship, it just feels very wholesome.
  • In ticking off to-do lists - A wave of relief and the feeling of accomplishment always washes over me after a productive day.
  • In cups of tea and magazine articles - This Sunday tradition of mine always leaves me feeling content, so much so that it's become more of a daily tradition than a Sunday one.
  • A social media break - Things we're getting a bit much recently so I decided I needed a bit of social media-free time, because follow counts, likes and losing the day to Instagram doesn't always make me feel great, so I deleted the twitter and Instagram apps from my phone and had a few days without worrying about what to post next and scrolling other peoples lives instead of living mine. I'm not perfect, so I obviously slip up a few times and had a peak on the newsfeeds, but I spent so much less time glued to my phone and didn't check Instagram the moment I woke. I might have lost a couple of followers but it was good for my soul.

How I'm making my day to day more joyful:

- Getting dressed every morning, wearing clothes that make me feel good.

- No saving my best, for best. Every day I should be living my best life.

- Turning off my phone more.

- Buying what I want, not what's cheapest.

- Listening to my intuition.

- Taking breaks when I need them but not letting them lead to unnecessary procrastination.
