Lifestyle blogger Chloe Harriets smiling walking down the street - blogging tips
Lifestyle blogger Chloe Harriets smiling walking down the street - blogging tips

March this year, will mark my 5th year of blogging. Over these years, my blog has come a long way. Find myself both cringing as I look back at old posts, and proud of how far this little website has come. So I thought I share of some things I've picked up along the way, those things I do differently if I started a blog today.

Photography matters:

When I began my blog, I used to take one iPhone photo, which little thought went into. The picture would often be poorly composed, out of focus, and basically in the dark  (see old posts here and here for a lol). Over time I've developed my photography style, taught myself to use a camera, and got better at composing images. I fell in love with photography, and my blog saw the benefits - my views went up, my branding improved, and I found myself feeling more confident when telling others about my blog. Improving my photography, meant everything looked more professional, and myself and others began to take me more seriously as a blogger. Improving and learning about photography is made accessible with the right tools. The Panasonic Mirrorless camera is at the top of my wishlist, as it's the perfect tool to keep pushing my photography further, to continue improving and create better imagery than ever.

Make friends and help each other out:

Blogging should be fun, it should be social. Find a local event to go to. Make friends, don't be afraid to reach out to other bloggers. You already know you have plenty in common, and this industry will give you so much to talk about so there is no need to worry about awkward small talk. Not all blogging friends you have will work out (have I ever mentioned the time I got ghosted by a blogger?) but the ones that do, will absolutely be worth it.  Another good thing about having blogger friends is you can help each other out. My friend Madi and I often play photographer for each other. Not only has having a blogging friend been the source of many good days and lots of laughs, but it also offered me support, made attending events less daunting, it's also allowed me to practice my own photography but also get some pretty decent outfit shots myself.

Use Other Social Media Platforms:

Post to your Instagram, tweet etc,  don't be afraid to share your work.  Nobody will know your blog exists if you don't tell them. I've often fallen into the trap of working hard on this little blog and hoping people stumble across it rather than shouting about it. Sure, it can feel a little cringe at first, but everyone starts somewhere and putting your energy in something creative, no matter where you're at with it, it's something to be proud of. I've recently been trying to interact more of my social media channels, commenting on other people's feeds, letting them know when I like their work, with the knowledge that it might just make them feel good, and in turn, I've seen my followings grow. I've also recently decided to start using Pinterest to see if that can drive a bit more traffic to my blog.

Post what you want, not what you think you should post:

Your blog posts won't be as good when you're posting for others, rather than yourself. Good writing tends to come from a place of passion. Sure look elsewhere for inspiration, but post what you're interested in, not what you think others will want to read. There are bound to tonnes of people who like the same things as you, that will want to read your blog.

Be organised, be consistent, be realistic:

Plan your content realistically - don't say you're going to post three times a week when you can't keep it up. I've made the mistake before, it led to burn out, poor quality posts missed blog posts and guilt. Figure out a posting schedule which actually works for your lifestyle and keeping in mind you want the blog post to be the highest quality. Try to get ahead, blog when you've got free time, find the joy in blogging, and being organised will come hand in hand. If you're inspired and enjoying the blogging process you'll be ahead before you know it.

Recognise when burn out is coming:

There is, of course, such a thing as too much hard work and we're all prone to burn out once in a while. Catch it before it's too late. If you recognise burn out coming step away and give yourself a break. The likelihood is, you've been working on posts so hard that you deserve one.

Do something creative when you're lacking in inspiration:

Go for a walk with your camera, paint, write in your diary, anything which doesn't require thinking about blogging, when you come back to blogging you'll be feeling refreshed and inspired. Sometimes stepping away from the computer and living in the real world for a bit is all we need to find that spark again.

Be proud.

Where ever you're at with blogging, you should be proud. Whether it's your full-time gig or you're a complete blog newbie. Blogging takes hard work, often being vulnerable online,  and putting yourself out there and that is something you should find pride in.

October Round Up.

Saturday, 25 November 2017

I used to write a weekly round-up post, where I’d reflect on the previous week and share all the great things I read, watched and enjoyed. I found writing them somewhat therapeutic but they soon got abandoned as they were difficult to schedule and writing them on Sunday wasn’t always an option. I missed them so I’ve decided to start writing a monthly round-up instead.

So October, honestly, I’ve been a bit of a hermit this month, a mixture of trying to save money and trying to get organised with uhhh, life, has meant my social life hasn’t exactly been blossoming, nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed the month.

October is one of my favourite months, I’m a big fan of autumn so just find myself feeling more content this time of year. My highlights from the month have included going to a Halloween Party, and for a lovely Autumn Walk with plenty of photo opportunities (as you can see in this post). Feeling poorly has meant I had to cancel a few plans which is a shame but despite my cold, I'm feeling perkier than I was.

6 Loves: Blogs.

Monday, 10 July 2017

I thought I'd throw a little positivity into the blogosphere today, and share some of my favourite people of the internet with you. This is going to be the first part in a little series, beginning with my favourite blogs. I've got to be honest I struggled to narrow it down, but these are the ones I've found myself reading most recently.

Wish Wish Wish -The Photography on Carrie's blog is stunning, she has got her style down. Carrie travels plenty,  so you're sure to feel that wanderlust when scrolling. Not only is the photography flawless, but her writing is relatable. I recently read this post on Instagram and loved every single thing she said.

Grace Francesca - I think Grace is one of the most real, honest people I have come across in the blogosphere, she such a  girl boss. I love everything about her blog, the raw honesty and relatability. She is just very inspiring. Her recent post,  'Why I Started Blogging' was such a positive reflection on the world of blogging, and I found it really interesting to hear why somebody so successful started out!

Jaynie Shannon x - Jaynie is my BFF IRL, and she also has a great blog. If you're into reading beauty, it's the place to go. Her pictures a crisp and her she writes the best beauty pieces. Her writing also really just sounds like her, reading Jaynie's blog, I feel like I am just having a chat with her.

Madeliine Grace Blogs - Madi is someone else I know IRL. I love reading her blog, her style of writing just sits well with me, it's easy and interesting to read. Her blog has a diary feel to it, which I love.

The Cornish Life - I don't live in Cornwall, but this blog has given me some serious envy of those who do. Just looking at Anna's blog brings a calmness over me, the photography is full of beautiful blue landscapes. Anna is so relatable and in general a really nice girl. The Cornish Life is a great lifestyle blog where you can read everything from places to visit in Cornwall to leading an eco-friendly life. I loved her recent post 'Summer. This is it', it was such a great reminder to not let time slip away.

Wonderful--you - I love Megs writing for wonderful you, there is a true honesty to it, which makes it so relatable, and all of Megs writing is very heartfelt. Meg works with her friend Alexandra to get the most amazing, editorial style photography for the blog. Along with the sleek layout, this gives it a real profession magazine feel.

What are your favourite blogs?

Autumn Walks

Monday, 31 October 2016
If you follow me on Instagram (@chloehayfs), you'll know how much I love Autumn. Autumn is by far my favourite time of year, to the extent the excitement gives me butterflies in my stomach when I notice the first signs of leaves falling, and temperatures dropping. I love how colourful the world becomes, I love stepping on crisp autumn leaves, and feeling that crisp cold air against your face, I love the clothes, I love being cosy inside, and being chilly outside, I love wrapping up in jumpers and sitting by bonfires, and Halloween, and the oranges, and reds, and did I say I love autumn leaves?! As you can probably tell, everything about this time of year makes my heart happy - I just love everything about Autumn.

Lately, I've been enjoying appreciating Autumn and taking myself on some Autumn walks, along with my camera to get some snaps of how beautiful everything is this time of year.  So I thought I'd share my love for Autumn through the view of my camera...

You can probably tell I think Mother Nature is just a real babe this time of year by the excessive number of images (it took a lot of narrowing to get to this many!)

As I'm enjoying playing with my camera more than ever, one of my favourite things about Autumn this year is capturing the beauty of it through my camera lens, as you can probably tell!

What's your favourite thing about this time of year?

bloom book estée lalonde Featured photography reading

Bloom by Estée Lalonde

Thursday, 27 October 2016
I recently read Bloom by Estee Lalonde, and as I found myself unable to put it down (it only took one day to read from cover to cover), so I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

Firstly, this book is damn beautiful. The titled part of the cover is made from a gorgeous textured fabric, the image of Estée on the front is lovely, she just looks like her (you know what I mean right? Or am the only person who think we sometimes look like our personality in photographs?), and the colour of her jumper on the front carries through to the inside cover of the book. The aesthetic of this book are on point and I think the cover itself is a good reflection of Estée and the contents of the book.

I've watched Estée's videos and read her blog for years now, I feel as though I've really seen her grow into herself on camera, and I feel as though she's an old pal (sadly she's not!), and this book represents her truest version of herself through and through.

The book is split into the sections: life, people, work, beauty, fashion, home, travel and food. Each subject covers a wide ground. The book talks about serious topics such mental health and more light-hearted stuff like styling hair.

The book is very honest throughout, and Estée shares  a lot with the readers than she hasn't already shared on her Youtube and Blog, such as her relationship with her dad, and her struggles with mental health, all of these things she shared in her book only made my respect for Estée grow and made her seem so much more relatable.

The book is very well written, I think sometimes when Youtuber release a book there's a stigma which surrounds it, and people assume they're writing a book because it will sell, whether or not they can write - well I'm telling you that Estée can write. Her words were engaging and the content was interesting throughout (hence why I read it in a day).

I found myself emotional as I read letters to Estée from her mum and partner Aslan.
I also loved hearing more about Estée and Aslan's story. You know there is something special about a relationship when someone is willing to move to another country which they've never visited to be with someone - reading this made me see what relationship should be and understand that when you know,  you just know. Their love story is just really really lovely.

Estée talks a lot about finding yourself, and 'blooming' into who you're supposed to be in this book, and that's something I think I've realised is really important, and has begun to impact my day to day life as I trying to be the truest version of myself.

This book is also very beautiful - it's filled with lovely photographs which are all very personal to Estèe, that fit perfectly where they're placed. The layout of the book and the images chosen just really work, you can see the thought that has gone into it!

Bloom is really something special! I'd recommend picking up and having a flick through, take in the words, and appreciate the beauty and work that's gone into it.

autumn day trip exploring Featured friends leigh woods lifestyle nature photography

Explore with Me - Leigh Woods.

Monday, 24 October 2016
As I mentioned in a previous post that I'd recently went for an Autumn walk in Leigh Woods with some friends, of course, I took this as an opportunity to play with my camera.
As we wandered through the woods I found myself snapping away while being a bit of a creep lurking behind my friends to get some pictures, and scanning the environment for the best photo-taking opportunities. Of course, my friends took the chance to hide from me when I stopped to take some pictures, after aimlessly walking in circles, I noticed them peeping out behind the trees - uhh, very funny guys.
I felt so relaxed as I walked amongst the trees, and taking in the nature which was all around. It was a definite reminder of how good it is to get outside, especially when you can wrap up warm on a lovely crisp autumn day.
I love being outside this time of year despite the cold, I think everything is so beautiful during Autumn, and of course, it was nice to have a good ol' catch up with close friends as we explored.

Apparently somewhere along the lines, I became Matt and Lauren's personal couples photographer - I quite like these images, even if I did drive them insane as constantly taking pictures of them and creeping behind them to get the candid shot I wanted... they both asked me to send them the pictures I took later that day, so as much as they complained, I'm sure they were a little pleased really!

There were some incredible views along the way. I often forget what a beautiful place Bristol really is.
All round, it was just a lovely afternoon! I'm definitely going to be taking my camera on more day trips - I love taking enjoy opportunity to take photographs!

Love C x
