Sometimes you need a hangover day without having any alcohol the night before...

Monday, 6 March 2017

I don't often drink these days. A year or so ago, I spent my Saturday nights dancing away in uncomfortable shoes sipping vodka red bulls, and two years ago I spend both my Friday and Saturday nights drunkenly dancing in clubs after having too many sambuca shots - which inevitably lead to years of spending my Sunday's in bed hungover, usually trying to figure out whether food will make me vomit or be an incredible hangover cure. Usually, I wound up eating a lot of unhealthy food, going in and out of sleep, and binge-watching crap on my laptop. The day is usually both hideous and genius.

I've got to admit, these days the occasional night out is plenty for me, and I don't particularly miss puking in a skanky toilet because I've partied a little too hard, even if the girls you meet in the toilets, are probably nicer than anyone you will ever meet soberly - but I do miss the morning or day after the night before.

Now, obviously, I don't miss the hangover - there is always a point during the hangover which I get very dramatic and wonder if I'm going to die. Doing so many shots that I see my life flash before my eyes at 4 pm the next day is hardly missable. What I mean is I've missed the day which the hangover is an excuse for.

It becomes completely acceptable to stay in the PJ's without showering until late the next evening, maybe - there is something so gross yet completely wonderful about this.

For the first Sunday in ages, I decided to have a hangover day, without having a drop of alcohol the night before. I stayed in my PJs, hardly moved from my bed, ate all the junk food and watched Gilmore Girls on repeat. I allowed my mind to not think more than the obvious debate of shall I go and pee risking losing my comfy space.

And, oh dear lord it was delightful.

My sister even came and asked me if I went out the night before - it felt great to tell her no.
Who knew I non-alcohol induced hangover could be so good for the mind?
Occasionally there is something great about being a bit of a slob.

fashion fashion blogger ootd oote outfit outfit of the day print silk. jumpsuit styling tigers wedding whistles

Tigers.

Friday, 3 March 2017

I found myself admire the Tiger print jumpsuit in the window of Whistles for weeks, but I couldn't justify splashing on the jumpsuit simply because the tiger print is really freaking cool. I then I got invited to the evening of a wedding, and jumpsuit went on sale in the same week - so I felt as though felt as though the universe wanted to me to have the jumpsuit - and even if the universe didn't want me to have it, I wanted it enough.

As this jumpsuit is quite a statement piece, I found styling it to be a little challenging - in the end
I fell in love with some silver heels and decided the worked quite well against the navy of the jumpsuit.

To go with heels I picked up a small silver bag to put my bits in. The bag is quite small and if overstuff it, it does tend to pop open (as I'm sure you've noticed in a couple of the pictures). The jumpsuit, however, does have pockets, which excited me far too much! The pockets also stopped me worrying about the practicalities of having an iPhone 7+ and all the other handbag essentials to store and a tiny bag.

As for the jumpsuit - I am in love with it. It's silk - the fabric feels lovely and the quality of the garment is great. The only downside to the silk fabric is the creases, and panty lines can definitely show with the wrong underwear.  It's a halter neck - so either a strapless bra or no bra is required as straps will definitely ruin the look.

The print is of tigers which I love. I think the tiger print is really effective because the tigers aren't initially obvious. The tiger has little orange eyes which bring another beautiful colour into the jumpsuit. I decided to go with orange tones nails and lips to tie in with the tiger's eyes, and I think it nicely finished off the look!

a quiet kind of thunder after you book blogger books finding audrey nina is not ok pretty little liars reading world book day you know me well

What I've read so far this year...

Thursday, 2 March 2017
As it is world book day, and I am a huge book worm, it only seemed appropriate that I have a book related post for you today. So, I thought I'd give you the low down on what I have read so far this year...

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Sheppard:

Honestly, I was a little disappointed by this book. The storyline pretty much lines up exactly with the TV series (obviously as the series was based on the book), apart for the odd few changed which are just a little irritating, for example in the book Emily has a sister. I loved watching Pretty Little Liars, but in the book, the storyline just didn't seem quite so exciting - possibly because I'd already watched the series. I also found the narrator a tad irritating and I'm not sure why. I sadly didn't love this book, so I've only rated it 2 stars.

You Know Me Well by Nina Lacour and David Levithan:

This book is written in the two different perspectives, the perspective of Mark who is madly in love with his best friend Ryan, but hasn't worked up the nerve to tell him how he feels, and then Kate whose nerves always get in her way. Kate has fallen in love with a girl who she's known through a friend and has been talking to online. Although Kate and Mark have sat next to each all year, they don't talk until they end up at the same bar where Mark is hurting because Ryan has met somebody else, and Kates's nerves had to lead her there, as she runs away from meeting Violet for the first time. Kate and Mark become friends, and the story continues developing both Kate and Marks friendship which each other, and their romantic relationships. I really loved how this book dealt with friendship as well as romantic relationships, gay relationships, and the feeling we aren't enough. I enjoyed this story, but didn't love it - I liked the characters, but the narrative wasn't that impressive, and I found it to be a little forgettable. I rated this one 3 stars.

Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella:

Audrey is a teen who suffers from major anxieties, and mental health issues. This book revolves around Audrey coping with her problems and the impact they have on her family. There is also an underlying romance in the story which I like. Personally, I found the character of Audrey's mum really irritating. However, I did love Linus' character. I really enjoyed seeing Audrey's character develop through the book, she becomes more self-aware and she begins realises how she is impacting the people around her which is interesting to see. I think the book did a great job of explaining how when recovering from the traumatic event and coping with mental health issues, it's not just straight-up - there will be bumps in the road. This book gets a 3 and a half star rating from me.

A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard:

I've written a full review of this book, which you can find here, so I'm just going to touch on it in this post. Steffi is a selective mute due to severe anxieties, and Rhys is death - when they meet they connect through their abilities to communicate with each other in sign language. They fall in love, and the book is about how they develop as individuals and together. I've rated this book 4 stars.

After You by Jojo Moyes:

After You is the sequel to Me Before You - I didn't really have high hopes for this books as I find sequels are often disappointing, however, I was pleasantly surprised. This book has a fab storyline. Some new characters are introduced which keep things interesting. I love Lily character, I think in nice to have a teenage character in the book, and her character is very well written. The book not only deals with Lou grieving after the loss of Will, but also her new life, relationship, and the future. Although there was one part of this book I thought was quite unrealistic, I loved the narrative. There's a lot happening, some things which are happening we are unaware of, until later in the story when it switches from Lou's perspective to Lily's.  The character dynamics in the book work well. I also really loved the end of this book.  This book gets 4 stars from me.

Nina is not ok by Shappi Khorsandi:

This book is about a 17/18-year-old girl called Nina who has a drinking problem. I found this book to be quite intense. It seems they are chunks of the story missing, as it is written in Nina perspective and, she cannot always remember what has happened when she's been drunk. I found this book really interesting. I really disliked Alex character, which I'm sure most people will - I also disliked Zoe's character but I think it was very important she was part of the story. The book is about Nina recovery, and her dealing with traumatic things which have happened to her. I think it's really interesting to see how Nina's character develops through the book, and read a book which is written about alcohol addiction in a younger person. In the book, you hear Nina's friends telling her not to worry because everyone's done things they regret when they've been drunk - which made me really think about how alcohol abuse in normalised amongst young people. There is, of course, a lot more to the storyline than simple Nina dealing with her alcohol abuse, and as I said it's intense. I'm not sure enjoyed is the right word to use, but I think this book is very clever and was written very well, and it's very eye-opening. It may be a tiger if you've had alcohol problems, though!

I hope that all made sense! It's always hard to get a balance when writing about a book, as I do not want to give too much of the story away, but I also need to tell you enough about it!

What have you been reading recently?

Love,
C x

day out exploring friends leigh woods mental health muddy nature outdoors outside walk

Muddy Walks, Clear Minds.

Wednesday, 1 March 2017

Lately, I haven't been in the greatest headspace, if I'm honest, I've mainly been feeling pretty damn right crap, but I also haven't been doing all that much to prevent this feeling. I simply found myself stuck in a rut, and felt very cooped up in my own house. After leaving my previous job, I've been at home concentrating on blog stuff, and both facing and ignoring the daunting what's next question, so much so that I distanced myself from the outside world and found sadness in my current situation, where sadness needn't be,

This week, however, seems to be completely different. I feel as though I've gone into this the week (I'm writing this on Monday) with a new perspective (let's hope it lasts until, at least Friday)  and a fresh mind, and I'm putting that down to fresh air and friends.

Sunday afternoon I went for a roast (veggie one for me), and a very muddy walk through Leigh Woods with two of my friends.  I love exploring with my camera, and catching up with friends,  and I think the day was arranged just in time for when I needed it. It really cleared my mind and gave me the opportunity to appreciate what's around me.

Somebody, remind me to go outside more! The world is a beautiful place and my laptop screen, and self-inflicted blues should not stop me from taking it in.

beauty colour eyeliner highliner marc jacobs marc jacobs beauty

Highliners.

Tuesday, 28 February 2017

Lately, I have been enjoying experiment with eyeliners, and the Marc Jacobs Highliners have really been floating my boat.

They're a gel formula so they just glide on, and they really late! I'm usually a liquid liner kind of girl - but these are so much easier to apply, if you want to wing it you can just drag the pen along slightly and smudge it out into the shape you want. It makes application easy, and give you the option to go for the neatly finished look, or a more smudged liner - personally recently I've been enjoying wearing my liner a little smudgy. I've also smudged these Highliners all across my eyelid for a full shadow look.

The Marc Jacobs Highliners give you a little time to smudge before they dry, and then once they set,  they last pretty much all day on me - which is amazing, considering how much my eyes water, and being the more tired girl ever does mean I'm prone to rubbing my eye and ending up with black eyes - yet these liners stay put nonetheless.

The colour range in this liner is great. I have three different colours. The shades Blacquer, Lollipop and Wavelength. All of which I have become obsessed with, of course the black ('blacquer') shade is essential because everyone loves black liner once in a while, my favourite to wear recently is the pink ('lollipop') shade, which just creates the most stunning pink look, and for when I'm not feeling quite so adventurous, I'm enjoying wearing the blue shade (wavelength), which I think look incredible against my brown eyes - it makes my dull eyes pop a little more.

These are £20 which I think is pretty good considering the high quality.

I'd recommend giving them a go!

craft creative family friends gilmore girls happy memories photographs pictures scrapbook scrapbooking tea

I have a new hobby...

Monday, 27 February 2017

After a much needed clear out I came across a miniature suitcase, which was messily filled with photographs, which were just gathering dust, and getting ruined - I also then came across two empty scrapbooks, which I'd never got around to filling - so I decided to organise myself a bit, and put the pictures into my scrapbooks - initially for organisation sake.

I got myself a cup of tea, popped on Gilmore Girls (my obsession is back), and began putting my pictures into the books. I felt a bitter-sweet feeling as I looked through my old photographs, reminiscing on old times, and realising how much my life, my relationships and I had changed over the years.

As my hands kept busy typing out labels, and my mind was engrossed in Gilmore Girls, while considering what which washi tape would look best, I realised I felt more content than I had in a long time.
My need to organise my photographs soon transformed into something I love to do, the scrapbook has recently become a favourite lone pass time of mine. And I've got to say, it's so much nicer to look through my photographs now they're mainly all in one place and organised. I've filled two scrapbooks within two weeks, and I now need to buy my third. I've been trying to take more photographs - so my new hobby ties in perfectly with this goal!
I hope you enjoyed this little peek into m scrapbooks! I know they're something I'll look over in years to come.
