I've been doing self-care wrong...

Sunday, 12 February 2023

It was only a week ago I wrote my last post, but it feels like a lot has changed. Like somehow the earth has shifted on its axis and the world has hit the reset button. I feel in a different place.

One of my goals for this year was to look after myself properly. By that I mean to invest in looking after myself. I'm fortunate enough, that if I budget correctly I am able to afford to do that. This new year's intention has changed everything.

Almost two weeks ago I started taking action on this goal. I finally saw a private dermatologist about my eczema. I've had eczema forever. But over the past few years, it's been bad. Like everything it goes through phases, it follows the pattern of my stress, and I find myself stuck in a vicious cycle, a catch-22. Stress is the cause, and what it causes. The NHS are great, don't get me wrong, but with this, they haven't provided the help I've needed to live the life I want. I won't go into how difficult living with eczema has been, I'll save that for another day. But when it's severe and covers 90% of your body, living in that body does not feel like a pleasant place to live.

So I did some googling. I rang a dermatologist and on the same day I found myself in their offices (offices... is that what they're called? Surgery maybe?)

I won't go into my treatment plan, you don't need to know that. But I will say, my life feels like it's changed. Changed in a way that no level of mindfulness would have achieved.

You see, I am a self-confessed, obsessed self-care junkie. The more cringe and cliché and more into it I am. Often I've fooled myself into thinking my mindset would change everything. It was my mindset that got me through the bad days, but I should just be dragging myself through the days, by clinging to the hope of words of affirmation, when my skin feels on fire. Life is for living after all.

This one change made me realise I'd been doing it wrong. The self-care thing that is. Where I thought I was an expert, I was actually quite naive and narrow-minded. I'd bought into an idea of self-care that was sold to me through aesthetically pleasing Instagram feeds. Now don't get me wrong, there's a place for all of that. But I'd made the mistake of thinking that's where it started. It's not. The pretty stuff... that's sprinkles on the self-care cupcake. It's sure as hell, not the cake itself.

There needs to be a solid foundation on which you build upon

When my skin was so itchy, that I was up all night, my 10-minute morning meditation might have offered a small distraction, but it was also spent thinking about how I was itchy and tired and my skin hurt. And now I'm in a better place, I can feel the impacts of my mindfulness.

You can't work backwards. You've got to start from the bottom. Address the problem. Face the big things. And then add the other stuff in.

In all my years journalling, doing yoga, and picking up daily habits to become the person I aspire to be, I've noticed small shifts, and I always say if it makes you feel good, it makes you feel good it's as simple as that. But I've never felt such a difference, huge a big transformation in my energy, emotion and brain space as I have from putting my hand in my pocket and paying the money to actually see changes to the one thing that has truly made my days difficult.

And I know it won't always necessarily be like this. I know situations, circumstances, and moods change. But I will never take for granted the ease of having clear skin.

Let this be your reminder, self-care isn't the pretty stuff. The pretty stuff, matters. The lifestyle sprinkle. But you've got to start with life.

Girl in sunny window of coffee shop drinking iced latte - poetry blog post

Sharper Emotions

Sometimes I wonder
If I feel too intensely
If my heart breaks too easily
   Why I need to be handled so delicately
Desperately I desire to numb the sensitivity

The emotions that are sharper
Aren't just those darker
   My laugh echos louder
and smiles run deeper

My love creates cosmic energy
which I feel moving through each inch of me

So maybe it's a blessing
that I don't feel less

Although mostly it seems
I'm an emotional mess.

___________

Too Sensitive

Maybe next time
before you
confidently claim
I'm too sensitive
You might
think of my feelings
before you go about
hurting them.

____________

Unsure

For a precious
perfect instant
I felt so sure

But a moon has passed
and I guess I don't
anymore.

___________

Mosaic

I thought
   You'd changed
That the past was something
   we could rearrange.

Gentles kisses would allow me
to disengage
Instead, I'm questioning why I stayed,
mistakes I've made.

I hoped we'd make
what we'd broken
into something
     beautiful
Like a ceramic mosaic,
Sticking shards to create art, in the places it fell apart.

But there's familiar you
I see peeking through
between giggles and kind gestures.

I can't unsee
You can't unsay
So maybe it's best
we call it a day.

______________

One Week

Only a week has passed
   Since I wondered
If it were too soon
to tell you
      I love you.

Now I'm questioning
whether it's
     too late
to say
     Goodbye.

______________

Irrelevant

How I strongly I feel
   for you
Is irrelevant
when it weakens
How I feel about
myself.

______________

Feeling Heavy

I think of my weight so often
 it leaves me feeling heavy
My clothes feel tight
and my mind implies
 that's not alright.

I punish my mistakes,
eat another slice of cake
and whisper
diet starts
tomorrow.

Tomorrow comes, I poke my tum
and eternalise shame
Finding somewhere new to point the blame.
as if the shape of my body cause for complaint.
as if my curves represent wrongdoings
and stretch marks are a nuisance.

I analyse my size, wonder if I'm too wide.
But if I took a moment to push the aesthetics aside,
be cliché and think of inside,
I'd remember

it's this body is keeping me alive.

_____

Monochrome Kaleidoscope

It's like I'm looking through a
         cryptic kaleidoscope
Of mirrored, shattered
black, grey and white
In search of confidence, it will be alright.
When I can't see clearly
through the monochrome
Alone amongst dancing disjointed shapes
Unable to see means of
escape.

_______

Unreachable

Late twenties
longing
for a career
which I can't quite reach
Is the loneliest place,
I've ever been.

________

Happily ever after

I felt free and light and happy
and then you called me heavy
and then it hit me
the weight of us
the weight of falling back
in love
Wondering if I'm enough
or maybe I'm too much.
Of knowing I deserve better
More than the kindness you endeavour
but can't quite master.

There's Gilmore Girls and sunny days of laughter
and
occasional
coffee shop
tears
They leave you, confused. Unamused.
Brilliant, beautiful and emotional
It isn't a complete disaster
yet that's not the recipe for
happily after ever.

_________

Drunken, Dancing Souls

The music stops.
The light obnoxiously turns on.
We realise the crowd has dissolved into a few drunken souls
dancing
through the chatter-filled silence.

We're not ready to go home.

_________

Not so pretty poetry

These words entanglements
we're supposed to bear some resemblance
to poetry
   pretty poetry.

They shouldn't be means to complain
but my body and soul
I feel they've been drained
So we're left with the scribbles
of going insane.

Some Recent Poetry.

Friday, 13 October 2017

There will come a moment
when waves of me
will come
Crashing into you
And I will abandon you
in the
Storm

as I sit in still
appreciate the calm
and breathe in
your Absence.

~~~
We have to be
either something
or nothing
I may go insane
if we stubbornly remain
barely
in between
clinging onto
something of nothing.
~~~~

That place you held
in my heart
has relocated to the
depth of my chest
And the gasp of each painful breath
Through the darkness of words unsaid
They ache and echo
Desperately
holding onto letting go

~~~~
My heart hurts
because you, don't want it.
You fail to show a single sign of respect for it.
I'm living with constant regret of this
For, I know better.
But when I get an opportunity to
gaze until your encapsulating eyes
Poppet, I smile as I eat up, each and every
lie.
~~~~

Maybe undeserved escape from you
Or the numbing feeling
will stop me feeling
inadequate
You have a habit of, encouraging to me to feel
far from enough
So, here's my tough route
to feel self-love.

My Auntie and Uncle - a photograph I took which is completely unrelated to all of the poetry below, I just liked the image...
01/02
I want to write
But I can't
The rhythms don't ring right
And there's a sort of emptiness to my vocabulary

As I listen to the letter which falls from the flicks of your tongue so naturally
And pray to god, someday that will be the case for me.

But the arrangement of my word is off
And heartfelt feelings come across like
I couldn't really give a toss
 But I'll write in messy scrolls
Tiredly type away
Because I still there are things I need to say

My mind is filled with 3 am words
Which stop my sleeping slumber
Until I take I dissect, pick apart, observe and connect them
My pillow is pointless and my head wildly restless.

_____

04/02
For once in my life
I'm relieved you
Didn't reply

I despise my sleepy fingers
For letting dreaminess demolish my guard and
Following a desire
to ask how are you

When really ignorance is bliss
When I feel there is a star-studded intention in this distant
And I no longer feel a pressing urge to
Kiss
Each and every inch
Of that body which I no longer
miss.

So why sleep fueled sensations
Drive me to enquire on your emotions
When I really couldn't give
A shit
Is some sort of unsolved mystery.
But I hope to you don't see it as complimentary

Your head is big enough already.

____

06/02
Maybe they're right
Maybe I've got a few loose nuts
They don't warn of the side effect
of caring too much

Is it really so tragic if I want to know you're okay
And I think you're confused
But if I don't want to, I'd beg you not to stay.

Does it really make me a psychopath to text too many times?
I didn't realise rules really applied
In my eyes, if I think through every action and question whether I'm flirting with your attraction
Then I should be accused
Of masking truths
But wanting a chat,
What is the harm in that?

But honestly what does a text say about my mental state of being
And how don't you find yourself insulted
That you believe my only reason. Logically excuse,
For wanting to talk to you
Is losing my marbles.

You seem to be rolling across the ground
lost, and not found.

____

08/02

It was an act of desperation
and, yes
I didn't take your feelings into consideration.
Kettle, pot.
But when you distance yourself in the far fetch allotted slot
How do you expect me to feel empathy?
And when I tried so hard, sent you cards
My existence was still something you disregard
Guess because you fell
Apart

And I did too.
And the things we did won't be fixed with super glue
And I should stop trying
And should have shut my lips before lying
But they're not denying
You were gonna be pissed no matter what
And you were unapproachable
Did I tell you
He asked me on a date
Not as sleazy as you imagine,
eh?

And saying yes is taking advantage of his depression?
And his bedroom was an alternative
Because God heaven forbid
We went for a drink in the pub,
When before anything happened,
you decided
enough was enough.

We might have had sex
But it wasn't a sex thing
More like a broken-hearted, twisted minded
What the fuck is next thing.
It felt a lot more incredibly complex
than what you'd expect.

And I shouldn't have written that poem
 But I'm can't escape the words,
so I'm writing another.
I might have fucked up,
But you forgave me
after my sorry
four years ago

Now you decided to relive the past
because
you're pissed your relationship didn't last.

Sorry I hurt you.
But you weren't there.
And reacted
 The way we expected
Yet wonder why secrets were necessary
I wish I held it tight to my chest a lifetime longer
Because neither of our bodies are yours,
 remember

And there was really no point is fake forgiveness,
And really is my sex life any of your business?

04.10.16
As I built up the courage
to utter the words
you laughed,
in my face

So, my
I miss you
will go unheard.

_______

05.10.16
I became wrapped up in myself
Because you wouldn't allow me
to be
wrapped up
in you

Bitter makes selfish
through and through

_______

05.10.16
I am proud of all these raw, honest things that
I do,

So laugh,
all that you, please
Because, gleefully
I'm laughing too.

Mock me, block me, but your
bitterness
won't stop me.
Genuine lips turn to smile
Because I take pride when we say
I've got my own
style.

______

05.10.16
As I longingly wonder over the intricate
delicate details of your day

And ponder helplessly over the windows,
Winding, whirls of your brain.

Selfish, you say
As thoughts of you drive me
Insane.
_______

 05.10.16
We should be still

You're an ocean, your waves come
crashing in
I'm the jagged rocks
which slowly crumble
at these careless forceful encounters. I
turn to dust.

The elements change their mind
there's a change of heart
in the air
The wind stays, frozen.

Together we are still, as the rock
embraces the
steady ocean.
There's more than beauty in this lack of
motion.

_______

06.10.16
The girl who was always stuck in her
head
Found herself present
In a moment
An unforgettable, unmemorable minute
While her head lost it's vision
Based on hearts decision.

Her head came down from the clouds
Blissfully ignorant to the rain and thunder
So loud

Hearts were beating louder
With the loss of all power
by entangled bodies
And forces claiming
kisses
Fingertips drawn to
touching
Bodies laughing
aloud.

The only moment to remove her head from the
cloud
For once her head was quiet
and the world was
loud.

_______

08.10.16
I cannot decide whether it's twisted
Or beautiful
that you inspire me enough
to write broken poetry of
hurting hearts
And feel world's apart
As I sit in M&S

Over coffee and cake
I tremble over every mistake

_______

08.10.16
I guess, there's not really anything special
about
that you sometimes felt like sharing
And sometimes you didn't
No messages hidden
Just meaningless, emotional rhythm

_______

08.10.16
It's somewhat comforting, to think our version
of fate
Was more dependent on alcohol intake
and planned mistake.

_______

16.10.16
I hate to admit
I have a feeling
about
you

My gut tends to tell
white lies of loneliness
but I hope this time
it's true

_______

16.10.16
I hope you know
I wonder
How your mind
is keeping

I do not ask
My questions don't feel welcome
As in spite of kind communication
It's some sort of probation
We both know
Arguments always arrive

_______

24.10.16
I realise I don't like the thoughts which fill
your brain, those little habits, the
company you keep

It's more the way
your name rolls off my
tongue
and how comfortably I can lay my head upon
you stomach
hoping you don't suppress a need
to twiddle my red hair
amongst your dirty
fingers.
