New Hair, New Habits.

Monday, 9 April 2018

On Friday I stepped into the hairdresser and asked to get most of my mop chopped off. I didn't feel slightly nervous as I watched long hair float to the ground or saw the scissor wave goodbye to my locks.

I wanted to feel brand new, and of course, a new hairstyle is the best way to do that.

Despite the obvious fact all a haircut changes is your appearance, there's something about having a big hair change which feels like your entire world might in fact change, and you might just become that person you always dream of being. You know the one who wakes up at 6am, does yoga and still drinks cocktails with her friends who laugh endlessly at her jokes (I'm not even slightly funny so I have 0 chance of that).  She's mindful, successful, social, and has all the time in the world.

Realistically the only way to become this new person (minus the being hilarious part because I just not a capable of that) is to change my habits, not just my hair. So now I've got new hair, it's time to work on some new habits, to give myself every possible chance of becoming a version of myself which I admire. So, I'm going to work on implementing these habits.

- Regular Yoga - I've recently got into yoga, thank you lord for Yoga with Adrienne. I'm going to 30-day yoga challenge to really push myself. When  I'm feeling brave enough I'm also going to start going to a class.

- Mediation - I am a huge fan of meditation, but it's easy to get out of the habit of doing it. I want daily mediation to become second nature. I used the Headspace or Stop, Breathe and Think app FYI.

- Running - There was a time when I used to go for a run pretty regularly. Since breaking the habit I've struggled to pick it back up, the main reasons being I'm lazy and I'm unfit. Although I'm hyper-aware that needs to change, knowing it's something I'm going to be rubbish at for a while is off-putting. It's time to leave the excuse behind however and just run.

- Painting - I love painting, I'd say I probably feel most relaxed when I paint, however, it's something I've not done once this entire yet. It's a hobby which is easy to abandon when you get 'busy', however, it's something which makes me really joyful so it's time I made the time.

- Writing Poetry - I write a lot of short poems (I post them on my Instagram and you can read some in this blog post) which honestly I don't put much thought into, I just write down whatever comes out. I want to really start dedicating time to writing poetry and begin writing some longer pieces. I want to be able to call myself a poet without feeling like a fraud.

- Gratitude Journal - This is another habit with I tend to pick up and put back down. Life always feels a little nicer when I take the time to write down the things I'm grateful for and take a moment to reflect on my wonderful life.

- Journalling - I want to start writing more stuff for me.

- 1 Second a day - On my 26th birthday I downloaded the second a day app, with the plan to film one second every day until my 27th birthday.  However, I soon realised my life can't be pretty mediocre and I am forgetful. However, I want to start picking up my phone and filming that second each day to encourage me to find the beauty in every day and make the most of my life.

- Line a day journal - I have one of those five-year line a day journals, which this year the content is looking pretty sparse on. I need to get back in the habit of writing that line each day.

- Eat Better - I'm trying to eat more good stuff and less bad stuff, simple.

- Make more time for friends, do cool things - Often I let my introvert personality type convince me that I'm better to stay home. I want to start putting more energy into my friendships and finding more cool things to do with my friends.

- Upload blogposts twice weekly - I've been doing weekly blog post for a couple of months now and although I feel the quality of my posts are better than when I tried a failed to do 3/4 posts a week, I also have found myself feeling a little lazier with blogging, leaving posts until the last minute because I've got an entire week to complete each post. I think writing two posts a week will give me a kick up the bum and still be sustainable (so look out every Monday and Fridays at 12am). Yes I know this one is going up a tad late, let's ignore that.

- Book Writing - One of my new years resolutions was to get the first draft of my book completely finished ready to start agent/publisher searching and although I've spent a bit of time on it, I've got a long way to go, I want to start getting into the habit of writing a little (or a lot) each day.

- Create Youtube Videos again - It might be obvious that I lost my motivation on my youtube channel for a while. However, I want to get those creative juice flowing and make more interesting content. I want to create more than just favourites video where I simply chat to the camera.

- Get up at 6am each day - I've set an alarm for 6am, every single day, weekends included. I'm definitely a morning person, I always feel the most motivated first thing and knowing I've given myself that extra time the morning makes me joyful, so I want early mornings to become a daily habit not just for the days the snooze button isn't calling my name.

So, I've given myself quite a list to work on. But I want to fully jump in with two feet on this. I'm trying to stop doing things half-assed, so with my full ass, I'm setting myself up for a challenge. I'm going to create a habit tracker in the bullet journal to keep on top of this, and hopefully, I'll feel brand new soon enough.

I'm still completely unsure whether I love or hate the new hair. But I am excited for the new me.

Sunday Reading and Reflecting 4.

Sunday, 23 April 2017
Happy Sunday.

I've been feeling a little more positive this week, besides one particularly anxiety-fueled day this week as been full of good vibes.

What have I been up to?
I got my hair done. It's lighter and I love it. I went to an actual Salon to have it done, something I rarely do as my mum is a hairdresser so it felt like a real luxury. I'm so happy with how it turned out. They also used Olaplex on it, which means the condition still feels great.

I also went to a Networking event arranged by Rife magazine, all about getting into publishing and writing. I went by myself which made me very nervous, however, I'm just forcing myself into these things, because what's the worse that can happen, right? I'm not going to get confidence without searching for it. The event was good, I'm glad I went. After awkwardly wandering by myself, being too shy to actually to talk to anyone, a lovely girl and guy invited me to sit with them (thank god there were no mean girls, you can't sit with us vibes), which was very much appreciated - and we spoke about poetry - it's lovely to find people who share the same joys as you.

My Blog
I've got back into the swing of blogging and I'm so happy that I have. I've been really pleased with all of the content I've put out over the last week. I've been trying to be a little more creative with the layout of my images on my blog, and I think it's making a big difference to how my posts are looking.

My Youtube Chanel
This week uploaded a video explaining my new series Dear Dad. After saying in the video the first episode wouldn't be up for a while, I decided I'm going to upload my first Dear Dad series next Wednesday, so make sure you're subscribed to my channel so you don't miss it.
I'm trying to be more creative with my video editing. You'll see in the next video I've experimented with adding (poor) illustrations onto the video - something which I'm teaching myself to do. I edit in iMovie, which is making this a little trickier - but as I become more experimental with my editing I'm considering getting final cut pro - let me know if it's worth it!
I'm also considering doing an every day May - uploading a video each day in May. The style of the video will vary, they may be vlogs, sit down videos, poems etc. However it's a lot of pressure to put myself under, especially as I have a small audience and do not earn from Youtube - but I'm enjoying it so much, I think it would be a great way to push myself creatively. Let know if you think I should do it, or whether I'd be spreading myself a bit too thin.

Reading - Books:
Finally, I've got back into reading books, I've even purchased a few new ones to help myself keep up with it (let me know if you'd like to me to do a reading list post soon!). This week I began re-reading 13 Reasons Why. After watching the series, I wanted to refresh my memory on the book. It's a short read and not as in-depth as the series. I love Clay's character in both book and series form. I prefer Hannah in the series and feel we get to know her better there. This book is very special to me. It was just a story that really touched me.

Blogs
Poppy Deyes - #yolo - I just could really relate to this, I am not a natural yolo-er at all, but it's not just let yourself relax a little.

Poppy Deyes - My New Outlook on Style (another one from Poppy, sorry I had a bit of a blog binge). I'm trying to have this outlook. I wear to want I like and what I want to without worrying. Of course, it's easier said than done.

SaltandChic - The Pressures of Regular Blogging - I found myself nodding along to everything said in this post.

The Anna Edits - How I'm Trying to Make Better Clothing Purchases - Anna just has some great tips if you're trying to be a bit more mindful with clothing purchases.

Watching- Netflix
Pretty Little Liars - it's back and I'm excited about it. The first episode with a little slow moving, but they always are. I think there's a lot of potential for the final 10 episodes.

Watching - Youtube
Wonderfuly0u - Let's talk about Depression
Lucy Moon - Know your worth
Hannah Whitton - How to get organise
The Michalak's North Coast 500 Video - feel like I'm cheating putting this on the Youtube section - although this is a youtube video, The Michalak's far exceed any expectations of a youtube video - in fact, the quality higher than a lot of what you see in film and TV. Just so beautiful, thought out content. This was a really great video of theirs.

Listening -  Podcasts
Crash on my Couch - again, Will and Arden are hilarious
Emma Gannon CTRL ALT DELETE with Seth Godin - just really inspiring.

Hope you've all had a fab week.

bangs brunette chop fringe hair haircut me selfie style

Haircut.

Thursday, 23 February 2017

I'm sure you can tell from my recent posts, that I have been completely undecided on what do with my hair. The colour was a grown out mixture of faded red and blonde, and the style, well, there wasn't really one.

Anyway, I decided to just dye my hair a neutral brunette, meaning the upkeep will be easier and I'm a bit fan of brunette hair. The colour came out slightly darker than I wanted to, but I'm sure it was fade nicely in the next few washes. I like how it looks, and I feel I can be more adventurous with makeup and clothes now I have hair with is a more 'natural' colour. I also love that my hair and eyes are the same shade.

I decided to just get a trim, and then some bangs to change things up a little. The fringe is slightly thicker than I wanted, which is entirely my fault - when I asked if it was okay with wet hair, I said to make the fringe slightly thicker, not thinking about how it changes as it dries. I like the style nonetheless, I feel I look a lot younger with a fridge, but I love it.

Overall I'm really happy with my new do! There's something so refreshing about changing your hair up. What do you think of my new style? xx

chopstick curler curls hair

Corkscrew Curls

Friday, 13 January 2017
Corkscrew curls are a trend which I've seen around the internet a fair bit recently - and it's a look I really love, so I decided to treat myself to the Lee Stafford Chopstick Curler to try to create this look myself.
My hair is quite short, so I wasn't sure that I'd be able to pull off this look, or even get my hair around the curler burn free. However, these curlers are just £19.99 so I figure that if I didn't get on with them it didn't matter too much... but I'm glad I parted with that 20quid for these!
I do find it is quite time-consuming to use these to curl all of my hair- however, you only need to keep the hair on the curler for a second or so, so it probably works out it would take the same amount of time to curl your hair with any other curlers. This is also a hairstyle which completely transforms your look, so it worth spending a bit of time on.
I struggled the most with the underneath layer - especially as the back, I soon learnt how careful I need to be with this curler as I managed to burn my face :(

But...
How freaking cool does my hair look?!
...Well, I like it (which I'm sure you grasped from all of the photos).
I feel like I may become obsessed with this hairstyle!
It definitely a statement look - but I do love to make a statement!
What do you think of this hairstyle?

Hair Styling: Fishtails and Milkmaid Braids How to.

Monday, 30 June 2014
Recently some hairstyles I've been experimenting with have been milkmaid braids and fishtails. Once you get the hang of doing them they're pretty easy and don't take much time at all, yet wearing both of the hairstyles I've had an unbelievable amount of compliments (thank you very much, everyone, I really appreciate it). As people have been asking how I've done the hairstyles, I thought I'd do a little blog post on it.

The Fishtail:

The fishtail looks very similar to an ordinary plait, just slightly more complicated, however, I don't think it's much more difficult to create than a plait is, you just need to get the hang of doing it.

To create the fishtail you need to split the hair into two equal pieces, you then take a piece of hair from the bottom of one of the sections, pull it over, moving it into the other section of your hair, where you now hold this piece in place - to put it as simply as I can you move hair from one section so that is crosses over from one side to the other. then repeat on the opposite side. Continue repeating this until the full fishtail braid is formed.

Here's a youtube video that explains it in case my instructions aren't clear enough (there are other hairstyles in this video too which you might be interested in.. and yes Zoella is my favourite YouTuber, would definitely recommend watching her videos)

The Milkmaid Braids:

The milkmaid braids are nowhere near as complicated as they look and take no time at all.
To create this look you put your hair into two ordinary plaits, like so:

red haired girl with plaits
(although I'd recommend using clear elastic hairbands so they're less visible, you can get these in Boots, Superdrug etc)
Once your hair is plaited, you take plait, twist it slightly forward, place it on your head in the position you want it, and use some hair grips/bobby pins to secure it. Then repeat the same with the other plait.

Once again here is a video that may offer a clearer explanation (just to say these were both hairstyles I had experimented with before I saw these Zoella videos, however, have been doing them more since seeing the videos).

Fishtail Milkmaid Braids:

I also experimented with combining these two hairstyles, simply by putting two fishtail braids into the hair rather than plaits when completing the milkmaid braid look, and here's a picture of the result:
